Niscemi Landslide

Frana Niscemi (CL)

Starting on January 18, 2026, a wave of severe weather struck Southern Italy, causing widespread damage across Calabria, Sicily, and Sardinia.
On January 25, a major landslide occurred in Niscemi, in the province of Caltanissetta, affecting the southern area of the town. Authorities declared a red zone and ordered the immediate evacuation of residents living in the affected area.
From the early hours of the emergency, the Civil Protection Department operated in close coordination with local civil protection authorities, continuously monitoring the evolving situation.
On January 26, the Council of Ministers formally declared a state of emergency for the three affected regions.
Subsequently, on January 30, the Head of Department issued Order No. 1180, establishing the first urgent civil protection measures in support of the affected areas.

Under Decree-Law No. 25 of 27 February 2026, the Head of the Civil Protection Department has been appointed as Extraordinary Commissioner for the Niscemi area, with responsibility for implementing measures and actions aimed at enhancing safety and resilience across the territory.
